Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Storm Updates

From Scout Executive/CEO Nick Roberts:

Final Update

I am on-the-ground at camp with our ranger and leadership team. A local logging company and our camp staff are working to get roads opened and assisting our remaining week 4 campers on departing for home safely.

Camp suffered substantial damage to many of our facilities and campsites. I have decided that we cannot safely operate camp the remainder of the summer.

While I am disappointed to report this early closing; the safety of our Scouts, leaders, and staff is our first priority.

Saturday, July 20th

This morning our camp ranger and his team are out assessing the damage and preparing a plan for clean up. We know that you may be wondering how you can help. We ask that you refrain from heading to camp at this time to allow the team to put together the plan. We will let you know when your assistance is needed.

We will also communicate with troops scheduled to attend week 5 via email later this afternoon.

Friday, July 19th

Tonight, Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation sustained heavy damage from a severe thunderstorm. All youth, adults, and staff are accounted for and are under a roof for the night. One injury occurred and is being treated on-site. Camp is currently not accessible due to downed trees. After an assessment during daylight hours, an update will be posted. Thank you to the camp staff and adult leaders for following emergency procedures and ensuring the safety of our Scouts.

Summer Fun Since 1929!

Each year, thousands of Scouts experience an unforgettable summer at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation. Located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan stretches over 1,500 acres of beautiful forest, six spring-fed lakes and a natural creek. The reservation is home to two full-service camps, a wilderness camp, a high adventure base and a horse ranch.

Committed to excellence for over 90 years, Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation is one of a handful of Scout camps in the nation to receive a perfect accreditation rating from the Scouts BSA. Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan is located in Pearson, Wisconsin: 25 miles northeast of Antigo.

Our Subcamps

East Camp

East Camp sits on the “original” land of Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation and has all the atmosphere and rich tradition of one of the oldest scout camps in the Nation. Home to many programs, including a state-of-the-art Shooting Sports area, East Camp offers a rich unforgettable experience for youth and adults alike!

West Camp

West Camp is the newer part of Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation, established in 1959. It boasts its own rich tradition shaped by its spacious parade grounds and piercing red pines. Similar to East Camp, West Camp holds many program areas, a dining hall and various campsites on the western coast of Lake Killian.

Wabaningo

For units seeking to design their own program, this is the ideal place.  With hundreds of acres at your disposal, Wabaningo provides the perfect proving grounds for troops to plan their own summer adventure. Many units have chosen Wabaningo as a base camp to explore the surrounding lakes, trails and rivers during the day, returning “home to Wab” at night. You can set up an overnight outing to Wabaningo or visit during the day to add variety to your week at camp.

Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation offers scouts and leaders first-class programs and facilities. We strive to meet your unit’s program needs and pride ourselves on providing customer service that goes beyond your expectations. Even troops that visit Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan year after year and always return to find something new for them. Our units find a second home in the Northwoods. For six weeks each summer, our two full-service camps, East Camp and West Camp, serve thousands of scouts from the Northeast Illinois Council and beyond. Register for 2019 today

Never Too Young

This 4-Day, 3-Night experience  gives your Webelos the opportunity to gain a sense of independence, have fun in the great outdoors, and even earn advancements.  We are one of the premiere Boy Scout camps in the country, and gaining a sense of pride in our Boy Scout camp is often the key to keeping them in the program: From Star to Life, and the Trail to Eagle.

We encourage Webelos and Adults from the same Pack or Den to attend the same session when possible, so they can share this wonderful experience at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation.  But, whether you attend as a Pack, Den, or family, you and your Webelos Scout will be able to participate in these potentially life-changing opportunities together.
