The Remembrance Area at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation was dedicated on July 4, 2004, to serve as an area to honor those of our Scouting family who have since departed. It is located along the road between the Welcome Center/Family Camp and East Camp, downhill and a short walk from our Chapel.

Remembrance Area Honorees

Mission Statement

It will be the sole purpose of the Remembrance Area to honor those members of the Northeast Illinois Council, Boy Scouts of America, or participants at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation who have departed.

Criteria For Consideration

To be considered for a memorial in the Remembrance Area, an individual could have been a young person, adult leader, Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan staff member, a member of the Order of the Arrow, a member of the Wilderness Engineering Society, a Professional Scouter, or a local Pickerel/Pearson volunteer. The individual considered shall be deceased. Each name to be considered will be reviewed each year and verified before they are added to the Remembrance Area.

Adding a Name

To add a name to the Remembrance Area, please click here to fill out the informational questionnaire. Alternatively, you can fill out this form and email it to the Remembrance Area Steering Committee Chair Ian Hopkins by March 1. The Remembrance Area Steering Committee reviews each suggested name, and a final list is submitted to the Scout Executive for final approval and to verify scouting records if applicable.

After completing the verification process, plates are engraved and installed on the Remembrance Area boards. Each honoree will have their own plate, and each name will be added in the order they were submitted to the steering committee.

YEARLY REMEMBRANCE AREA SERVICE

Every summer, the Remembrance Area Steering Committee and Camp Staff host a special chapel service to celebrate the lives of the new class of honorees. The Remembrance Area Chapel Service is held at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan at the end of the third week of camp, typically on Saturday at 10:30 AM. The honorees' families, friends, and colleagues are welcome and encouraged to attend.
